Cathedral of San Gerlando

C

onstruction began immediately after the conquest of the city in 1087 and was completed in 1094. In 1200, rebels of Saracen origin, uncontrolled exponents of the past domination, induced Frederick II of Swabia to use the cathedral as a military garrison. Due to its location on a landslide-prone slope, the church suffered collapses and structural changes over time. Reconstruction work began in 1386 and numerous restoration interventions were carried out at the end of the 1400s. Due to further landslides/earthquakes, the church has been the subject of numerous interventions up to modern times. The structure was reopened to the public in 2019, also following the consolidation work on the landslide-prone slope.
